Here are some hazards for any and all pet owners to be mindful of during the holiday season. Taking a few simple precautions can help both you and your pet have a safe and fun holiday!
Holiday treats may be delicious for you, but they can be dangerous for your pet. Do not allow your furry friend to eat chocolate, candy, onions, raisins, avocados, yeast dough, or coffee. Do not give your pet bones of any kind.
Ornaments, ribbon, garland, Christmas tree lights, and lit candles can pose a danger to your pet.
Holiday plants, such as Christmas Lily, Christmas Rose, Poinsettia, Mistletoe, and Holly, can be toxic when ingested. Do not allow your pet to drink Christmas tree water – it can contain preservatives or bacteria that can cause illness in pets. Cover the bottom of your tree with a skirt or cloth so that your pet does not have access to it.
Pets can be attracted to the sweet taste of antifreeze, but even a small amount can be deadly. Clean up spills and store where pets can’t get at it.
Products used to melt snow and ice on walkways and roadways have varying levels of toxicity and can irritate your pet’s feet and skin. Avoid it when possible or wash and dry your pet after contact with these products.
Rodent killers are commonly used in cold weather months. Be sure to place them where your pet can’t get at them.
If your pet ingests something dangerous, please contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.
